the way we were

i sit on the split of the cushions of the couch
days before you were here
we were together as we had been
your lips touched mine in between conversations
your hands touched me with a hint of future love
footsteps touch the stairs outside
sounds of a heavy body sprint up the steps
i flip my head to the left
hoping there will be a knock at my door
i want you to be there on the other side
telling me how much i mean to you
but it’s not you
it’s never you
there is no real drama in this world
it’s all an illusion of the limelight
i think of you often
as the sun beams through the blinds
the scent of your cologne lingers on the pillows where your head had laid
i close my eyes to smell it
to remember the night
i miss the silver in your hair
before i cried on your chest
