that day in march

i met him on a friday
i don't remember the shirt he was wearing but i remember the way he looked in the setting sun
the coffee in our hands were cold
the cart was closing but we weren’t going anywhere
i stood there and asked you about your past
where you were from, what you were doing here
i can close my eyes and see your smile
the shape of your glasses on your face
how you held the clear plastic cup in your hand
your uncertainty when talking to someone new
a player had been unlocked that day
you stood there entertaining my questions
subtle laughs at humor we weren’t sure of yet
i didn’t know where it was going
on the 13th of march you stood there
only a few inches from me
your tattoos burned into my mind
