chasing the wind

the smell of you lingers
when i wake up in the morning
the day has broken
and the sun shines through the blinds
and the scent of your cologne is still on my pillow case
i know it won’t last long
so i hold on to it
i try to grasp the air you were laying in
an ecclesiastical attempt to chase the wind
you were here and now you’re not
a few days will go by and you’ll be here again
my mind goes through all that was last night
your eyes
your smile
your laugh in my ear
the shirt you were wearing
the tightness of your arms around me
i remember mostly the words you said
the conversations we had
the jokes we shared
“what if i get scared?”
“i’ll be here”
