Q9 WEEK ONE: Back in Savannah

January 6, 2025 - January 12, 2025 (week one of my winter quarter of 2025 at SCAD)

For so long while I was on break, I craved the coastal city of Savannah more than anything. I missed Pepe Hall & all it's wonders. I longed for the beauty of the Spanish moss on the giant live oak trees sprouting up from the ground at every turn. And now I have finally returned.

This quarter, I am taking a class on machine knitting, my second senior studio class, and a class focusing on studio production & the making of collections. This is my second to last quarter here at SCAD, which is so bittersweet (mainly bitter). I am most excited about building my portfolio & to combine all of my classes for them to all feed off of one another & for them to all contribute to the same theme.

And as far as my senior collection goes, I think I have finally settled on a title & a theme: Been Made New. This theme will allow me to explore the transformation & redemption we can all receive freely through the salvation through Christ, while also repurposing second-hand materials to make all of the projects throughout the year. Thus, I will give new life to materials to showcase how Jesus has given me new life through salvation.

Last quarter, I was able to narrow down my target audience & set up a continuous mood board for my collection. This is obviously subject to changes & adjustments, but I have included them both below. By making these visual representations of both, I am able to envision who I am making for & what guidelines I want to stay within. This does not limit my artistic expression negatively, but instead allows me to have a prompt to work with.

In my senior studio class, we are currently planning out our first project. I have discussed with the class how I want to make more fine art pieces to fill my portfolio with & to allow me to expand my creating, so I will be completing 2-3 pieces meant to hang on the wall. One will be a quilted piece that writes out a Bible verse & one will be made up of crocheted granny squares that will show a classic quilt square pattern.

I have almost settled on a color scheme, but it has come down to these two. Leave a comment below to put your hat in the ring to encourage me to pick which one you think is best.

For my machine knitting class, we have spent so much time on exploring the mechanisms of the machines because most of us (myself included) have never actually used the machines. My first day on the machine was wonderful because everything was working just right, but my second day was far from blissful since every stitch started dropping and I couldn't yet figure out how to troubleshoot.

It's all just a learning process.

And lastly, for the class that seems to already be a favorite, my studio production/collections class has started with planning of our first project. I will be exploring the technique of crocheting around a piece of fabric. This is something I have seen down by other artists, but I have not done myself. I am one to stick to the things that I am good at rather than try new techniques since failure is one of my biggest fears. But nonetheless, I must persist.

Every day is a learning process.

And one thing that I am constantly learning is how to deal with the struggles of running a small business. I had the honor of being a featured vendor at an event in Nashville this weekend with Miki Lorren, Gays Against Groomers, and Turning Point. I had spent the last month or so preparing, staying up way too late sewing, and running myself dry. Unfortunately, the Good Lord decided that it would be a good weekend for a snow storm across northwest Georgia on up to Nashville, causing me to put a pause on my travels and stay in Savannah, missing out on the event I had so hope to attend.

I cried many tears and prayed many upset prayers, but I still trust God. I trust that He will bring me better days & that my staying in Savannah was purposeful. Because I know His plan is greater than any plan I could conjure up.

See You Next Week, xx
